Maddalena Casulana was the first woman to publish under her own name, and Prof Laurie Stras’ recent discovery of a missing alto part book has allowed us to put together her 5-voice madrigals for the first time, showcasing her talents as a composer and putting her firmly on the map along with her famous Italian peers such as Monteverdi, Cipriano de Rore and Luzzaschi.
